Background
The first phase of this project began when the homeowners used our sister company Express Bi-Folding Doors to replace all the windows and doors within their house including a new front door, French doors, windows and bi-folding doors for a converted home gym. The project became especially unique when we became involved, as the homeowners decided to convert two large shipping containers into a sauna and living area complete with bi-folding doors and utilise two huge pergolas to add weather protection and flexibility to their new outdoor setting and swim spa.
Having used Express previously they revisited our fantastic showroom in Leeds to explore the bespoke solutions and quality of our pergolas and ultimately decided that they would form the key feature within their impressive new outdoor space.
What we delivered
Two huge bioclimatic pergolas have been installed into the newly created outdoor setting, which now feels like the key leisure area of the home. It is a completely unique space which forms a great contrast to the traditional stone-built property that has also benefitted from Express aluminium doors and windows.
Two offset and wall mounted pergolas
We mounted two of our bioclimatic pergolas onto the outer perimeter of the converted shipping container to add weather control and flexibility to the side and front elevation of the structure.
Both pergolas stand at 2700mm tall and span more than six metres, with one pergola sitting directly above a swim spar, and the second protecting the outdoor lounge area.
Frameless glass sliding screens
The body of the pergolas are screened by frameless glass sliding doors. The glass doors add increased weather protection without blocking any light or views and slide in either direction to fully open the sides to make the most of the fresh air and sunlight.
Bi-fold doors in-between the pergola & garden room
The new space has been designed very much with twelve months use in mind, so each pergola contains two infrared heaters. The two shipping containers have been converted into an open plan room & sauna which benefits from two sets of express bi-fold doors in each elevation to form an impressive L shaped outdoor garden room allowing the homeowners to fully open the space.
The beauty of the bi-fold doors is that when they’re open, the area doubles in size with no boundary between the indoor and outdoor space, so the heat coming from the sauna can combine with the four infrared heaters to create a warm outdoor space that can be used throughout the winter, and thanks to the bioclimatic pergola & frameless glass screens, the bifolds can remain open even in the worst weather. A huge and flexible space that can be enjoyed and used year round.
Fully bespoke and perfectly integrated
The pergola sits at a lower level than the garden lawn so has been measured perfectly to sit adjacent to a boundary wall making the outside space as large as physically possible.
The glass screens slide perfectly along the walls, so the sunken space feels warm and cosy when they’re closed, despite the two pergolas forming a huge area of almost fifty square metres.
Sizes and Specifications
The body of the pergola is RAL 9005 Jet Black in a textured finish. The roof louvres which open and close are powder coated to a vintage oak woodgrain finish.
The total height of both pergolas is 2700mm, both returns are 3600mm, but the lengths are 6060mm and 6300mm respectively.
Perimeter lighting around the inside of the upper beam, up lighting around the inside of the ring beam and LED strips within the roof louvres, along with the four heaters complete the impressive bioclimatic specifications within both pergolas.

This project is a great example of how we can improve and enhance your home from the inside, outside and everywhere in between.
