What is a Carport? How is it Different from a Garage?

Lifestyle

A common question amongst people who want to upgrade their exterior is, “What is a carport?”. These structures have become an increasingly popular solution for homeowners who need to protect their vehicles or want a versatile outdoor space, without the expense or commitment of building a full garage.

Whether you’re looking to create a covered storage area, an outdoor workspace, or simply keep your vehicle sheltered from the elements, modern aluminium carports provide a stylish, versatile, and cost-effective addition to your property. In this blog, we’ll explore what carports are, how they compare to traditional garages, and why aluminium is the top material choice for durability, design, and ease of installation.

What is a Carport?

A carport is a partially covered structure that shields cars from the gloriously unpredictable British weather, providing a dry and protected space from rain, frost, and sun damage without the cost and hassle of building a garage. The structure is not fully enclosed and typically consists of a covering roof, supported by posts or columns. The versatile space it creates can also be used for extra storage, as an outdoor workshop or as a patio area.

Carport vs Garage: Why Carports Might Be the Right Fit

The primary difference between carports and garages is their structure. While a garage offers a fully enclosed building with a roof, four walls, and a lockable door, a carport is typically open-sided and supported by columns and beams. This layout provides better ventilation, which is useful when working on a car and minimises any condensation build-up that might damage a garage.

Aluminium carports are an affordable and practical alternative for those looking to protect their vehicle without taking on the cost and complexity of building an enclosed space. Their lightweight structure makes installation quick and less labour-intensive. Falling under permitted development rights, these structures are a hassle-free investment that protects your vehicle and adds a contemporary feature to your property.

It’s Got to Be Aluminium

Aluminium carports are the top choice for homeowners. Unlike steel, which can rust, and wood, which rots without regular treatment, aluminium structures maintain their structural integrity and visual appeal for many years with minimal upkeep. Paired with a range of modern styles that can be fully customised with over 200 RAL colours & finishes, these structures offer a durable and versatile choice for any home. “We believe that every homeowner deserves a practical carport solution that doesn’t compromise on style,” observes the Managing Director at Exterior Spaces, Steve Bromberg. “Our aluminium carports deliver just that, minimal maintenance, maximum impact, and a custom finish every time.”

Advantages of Aluminium Carports

Known for their durability and sleek design, these structures are a practical solution that protects vehicles while adding value to your home. The key advantages that set attached and freestanding carports apart are:

  • Low maintenance: Aluminium carports only need an occasional clean with soap and water to keep them looking new.
  • Versatility: Carports create a covered outdoor space that has multiple uses, including storage, a workshop, or a patio area.
  • Easy Installation: Aluminium is a lightweight material, making transportation and installation easier, cheaper, and less labour-intensive.
  • Design Flexibility: Aluminium carports come in a range of bespoke designs to suit the practical needs of each home. They also come in a range of styles, with over 200 RAL colours to choose from at Express.
  • Boost Kerb Appeal: Aluminium carports are a stylish and modern addition to any home, providing a clean, finished look that boosts property value.

Do you Need Planning Permission for a Carport?

For most homeowners, the answer is no. In the UK, carports typically fall under permitted development, meaning you won’t need planning permission as long as:

  • The structure doesn’t cover more than 50% of your home’s land.
  • It has eaves that are no higher than 2.5 metres.
  • It has a total ride height of no more than 4 metres.
  • It isn’t within 2 metres of your property’s boundary.

If you live in a listed building or have a house within a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the guidelines might be different. It’s always good to check with your Local Planning Authority if you’re unsure to avoid any complications down the line.
