Background
The owners of this traditional home are fortunate enough to have a rear elevation that sits above a valley overlooking the West Yorkshire dales. The property leads out onto a raised patio that sits atop the lawn to provide the perfect vantage point to embrace and enjoy the beautiful surrounding views.
With their home positioned in such a fantastic location it is understandable why they were looking for an outdoor living solution that would allow them to use their outdoor space more often. After browsing online, they visited our impressive Leeds showroom and explored the functionality and custom options of our bioclimatic pergolas. We then visited the customers at home to carry out a detailed survey and confirm all the specifications for a bespoke and wall mounted pergola.
What we delivered
We installed a bespoke bioclimatic pergola into the compact space between the house and walled patio area. The colour chosen was exactly the same as one of our showroom displays, a unique colour sand called Sable Greece 2500, which is a great compliment to the oak beams in front of the rear elevation windows.
Wall mounted to the house itself
The rear elevation is dominated by a timber façade that houses the properties sliding doors and windows. We fixed the back edge of the pergola to the properties timber beam to connect the pergola to the house.
This creates what feels like an extension of the home, a flat roof canopy that can be opened and closed and a room that can provide shelter from the elements or be completely opened to fully embrace them.
Expertly integrated into the space
The pergola is as large as possible with the two pergola posts positioned in the two far corners of the patio area and the new structure dominating the outside space.
The pergola spans the full width of the homes sliding doors and sits centrally, leading out onto the stone steps that drop down into the garden.
Blinds combined with glass screens
The patio area is in a beautiful location but also a very exposed one, so the homeowners wanted to make the most of the location while benefiting from the protection that would allow them to use the space throughout the year.
Frameless glass sliding screens are the perfect product for this as they can protect from the elements without blocking the views. Drop roller blinds are perfect for solar shading, privacy and to use as a fly screen. The combination of these two products ensures that the house doors can now be left open to create a clear connection between the home and the newly formed outdoor space. The living room has now effectively doubled in size with the added benefit that the blinds and glass screens can be closed to prevent wind and insects flying into the house.
Combining the blinds with screens has created a multi-functional space that protects both the house and the outdoor furniture and can be enjoyed and adapted throughout the year.
A solution for levelling up
Glass screens were important to the customers for the functionality that they bring to the pergola but the patio itself wasn’t level. The solution we provided was to create a level upstand for the sliding glass doors to sit on. We then finished the upstand with a weatherproof membrane and included a slot drain for any water within the pergola to escape.
A fully bespoke solution tailored around this particular space.
Premium Specifications
The body structure and roof louvres of the pergola are a unique sand colour called Sable Greece 2500.
The height is 2860mm.
The space benefits from perimeter lighting and an upper light around the ring beam, plus six LED strips within the roof louvres.
The front of the pergola has five glass sliding screens and four on each return, the drop blinds are a sand colour and the space benefits from two infrared heaters that have been integrated into the pergola’s ring beam.
A lovely & Quintessentially British pergola installation
The finished results are outstanding. The home is very much a traditional property but the modern looking pergola blends into the space rather than creating a stark contrast. The additional space instead feels like a contemporary addition to the rear elevation, nestled into the patio area and feeling like an extension of the home.
An external addition that feels like a part of the home
From inside the home the pergola adds weather protection and shelter from the howling winds that can occur in the winter and autumn. The living area is warm and cosy, while the pergola feels like a modern add-on. The beauty of the space is that it feels connected to the home and makes the living room feel bigger.
The house doors can open to allow the occupants to lead out into the garden that can now be enjoyed each month of the year. An multi-functional outside space that feels like a beautiful addition to this beautiful home.
