This detached property in Lincoln already feels connected to the garden thanks to the rear extension bi-folding doors but with a firm intention to purchase an outdoor hot tub the homeowners wanted a pergola to enhance the outside space by offering both protection and the flexibility to use the space regardless of the weather.
With an outdoor patio and external power output in place the homeowners were looking for a bespoke pergola that could be integrated perfectly into the space. After seeing one of our adverts online, they followed up by visiting our impressive Leeds showroom to explore our pergolas in more detail. After meeting with our expert team in the showroom they chose our Phanes pergola as the perfect compliment to their home and we agreed all the finer details whilst carrying out a detailed survey on site at the property.
Perfectly placed
The pergola is long and narrow and measured perfectly sit on the right-hand side of the bi-folding doors so when they’re opened the home leads straight out and into the pergola. The six-metre length then runs past the house wall and past a pair of French doors, positioned perfectly so the homeowners can come in and out of those doors and straight into the hot tub.
Even though this pergola is free standing the homeowners wanted it to feel like an extension of their home, so it is positioned just 420mm from the house with a height of 2500mm, which lines up perfectly with the bottom tile on the pitched roof.
The new 6000mm x 2550mm pergola space did not require planning permission as it is classed as a temporary structure, but it feels and looks very much like an extension of the home.
LED Lighting
The pergola benefits from perimeter lighting and spotlighting within the louvres themselves. Our Phanes pergolas are available with LED strips or spotlights in the louvres, but the homeowners opted for the latter as the slightly softer and more subtle lighting detail adds to the homely feel of the space and compliments the warm look of the wicker dining set.
Side enclosures
The pergola has the flexibility to be closed on three sides with the side elevations screened off with drop blinds and the full length of the pergola protected by frameless glass sliding doors that slide both ways.
The fabric within the blinds compliments the pergola perfectly and is perfect for additional wind protection and privacy. The wind sensors within the pergola can also be programmed to bring the blinds up, if or when winds hit a certain speed, such as 25 miles per hours to ensure they don’t become damaged by inclement weather.
A multi-functional space
Bioclimatic pergolas are perfect creating flexible spaces like this. The roof can be opened and closed, and the light can be controlled and dimmed as required. The blinds are all operated on the same remote control and wind and rain sensors can operate both the blinds and roof automatically. Our Phanes pergolas even come with automatic open function when the temperature reaches zero to make sure that the louvres don’t become frozen in place and they automatically open in snow to ensure heavy snow loads don’t weigh down on the roof.

Collaborative and tailored approach
One major factor in their decision-making process of the customers was not only the quality of our products and the bespoke options but our flexibility to work with their existing trades around the installation of the hot-tub and associated electrical supply. We completed the installation of the pergola two days before the hot tub was installed, and the outcome is exactly how the homeowners imagined.
The new space feels very much a part of the home which contains two rear elevation doors which lead straight out and into the newly installed Phanes pergola. The outdoor is setting is secluded and protected with a hot tub that can be enjoyed and used for twelve months of the year and an outdoor dining area that can be utilised in the colder months also.
A connected outside space
Thanks to proximity to the bi-folding doors the whole interior space can flow into the pergola and the side enclosures will mean that fresh air can be bought into the house but without the annoying insects and flies that encroach our homes during the summer months. The pergola is a great looking structure that forms the central feature within the garden and adds a distinctive and architectural detail to home.
More importantly though, it is the bridge between the two, a sheltered space that can be closed off for privacy and fully opened as required, the perfect place for long lazy mornings, relaxing afternoons and a space to escape to at the end of the day. A great and flexible addition to this beautiful family home.
