Background
The owners of this detached property in Harrogate had recently renovated their home with a keen focus on outdoor living. Blessed with fantastic views the renovation included new windows throughout and panoramic sliding doors from our sister company Express Bi-Folding Doors, which all lead out onto a large, raised patio area.
The raised patio area leads down into the garden and is the perfect space for relaxing and entertaining. When the homeowners became aware of the pergolas displayed in our Leeds showroom, they already had a clear vision of how a pergola would complete their outside space and having worked with Express previously were assured that they would receive the same product quality, efficiency and customer service.
Upon visiting our Leeds showroom, they discussed the options available and decided that a wall mounted pergola in the same RAL colour as their doors and windows would be the perfect complement to both their home and their exterior space.
An extension of the home
The rear elevation of the home includes a snug and bar area, with outdoor furniture positioned on the outside of the sliding doors, so the pergola was mounted to the house wall so it could act and feel like an extension of the home.
The result is a designated and flexible outside space that can seamlessly connect with the indoors through the sliding doors.
Two post pergola
We can of course offer our pergolas free standing, but they are also available wall mounted where rather than sitting on four posts. The wall mounted set up uses two vertical posts and the pergola is fixed to a bracket that is connected to the house wall. This means that rather than a four-post solution the pergola then stands on two posts at the opposite end to the wall mounts.
This solution is perfect for compact spaces such as this and allows our pergolas to integrate beautifully, not only into the outside space, but to make them feel like a part of the home also.
Zoned off privacy
The layout of the pergola and the proximity to the house wall and neighbouring property meant that sliding aluminium shutters were perfect for screening off the back of the pergola. The aluminium shutters can be fixed in position or can be supplied sliding, as they have on this project.
The shutters provide a nice architectural detail while providing additional weather protection and more importantly privacy, by adding a closed feel to the pergola space.

To ensure that the pergola feels like a true extension of the home bioclimatic features are needed to keep the space both warm and functional.

A seamlessly connected indoor and outdoor space
The house renovation is now complete with the two-post pergola the perfect final ingredient to complete the outside space. The matching RAL colour ensures that it looks and feels like a part of the house with the pergola looking and feeling like a key architectural feature when viewed from the inside.
The benefits however can really be enjoyed by stepping outside into the south facing garden, a benefit that the homeowners can now enjoy for twelve months of the year thanks to their newly constructed and expertly connected outside space.
